In 2004, we managed the statewide campaign against Ohio’s Defense of Marriage Constitutional Amendment. In a year where nearly a dozen similar issues were on the ballot nationwide, our efforts resulted in the only bipartisan effort to stop the anti-gay marriage initiative. In the face of Karl Rove’s cynical effort to motivate the Republican base, we convinced Ohio’s Republican governor, both of Ohio’s Republican US Senators, Ohio’s Republican Attorney General and all of Ohio’s major newspapers to oppose the amendment.

Although the amendment passed, our efforts were a critical early step in ending efforts to use anti-gay marriage initiatives for political gain.
